How Much Coffee Does The U.S. Consume Per Day? Stats That May Suprise You

If you’re like billions of people around the world, you likely start your day with an invigorating cup of coffee. This popular drink provides a welcomed boost of energy, delightful flavors and comforting warmth with every sip, so it makes sense that it’s almost universally loved. In fact, the sheer number of people who drink coffee is huge, and the beverage is consistently among the top three most-consumed in the world.

As such, we thought it’d be fun to take a look at some key coffee-drinking statistics – let’s uncover how much coffee the U.S. consumes per day as well as other interesting data from around the world.

Number Of Coffee Drinkers In The U.S.

There’s no doubt that coffee is popular in the United States. More than 50 percent of adult Americans drink coffee every day, which represents over 150 million people. Most of these drinkers are brewing up their coffees at home in an automatic drip machine or single-serve pod brewer.

Number Of Cups Consumed Every Day

Americans consume over 400 million cups of coffee per day which equals about 146 billion cups per year, making the U.S. one of the world’s leading coffee consumers. On average, individuals consume a little more than three cups per day.

U.S. Adults Consume Healthy Amounts Of Caffeine

On average, U.S. adults consume between 110 and 260 mg of caffeine per day. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimates that a typical 8-ounce cup of coffee contains around approximately 100 mg of caffeine. Three-fourths of the country’s adults get the majority of their caffeine from coffee.

How Much You Consume Depends On Who You Are

There are some key demographics that tell us if someone is more likely to be a coffee drinker. For example, women tend to drink more coffee than men daily at a rate of four percent more, although their motivations are different – the average American male drinks coffee to help them wake up, while the average American female drinks coffee to help them relax.  Similarly, coffee drinking is more popular among a workforce with a higher income, with almost 70 percent of professionals making a salary over $30,000 consuming coffee, compared to just 58 percent of professionals earning less than that. Age also plays a role in how much coffee you can expect a person to consume. Almost 70 percent of those ages 60 and older are likely to be daily coffee drinkers, compared to just 47 percent of those ages 18 to 24.

Global Coffee Production Is Growing

Outside of the U.S., the world consumes coffee at an impressive rate, as well. Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. Through 2021, over 166 million bags of coffee were consumed worldwide, a slight increase from 164 million bags in 2020. Through 2030, the coffee production industry is expected to grow at a compounded annual rate of more than 15 percent, so the crop is only going to become more prevalent.

So Too Are Coffeehouses Growing

Like the increase on the production side of the coffee industry, the consumer side is also growing. The nearly 25,000 cafés around the United States sell 230 cups of coffee per day on average. Since they’ve seen so much success, the growth rate of cafés has seen a seven percent growth rate year over year, making it one of the fastest-growing segments of the restaurant industry.
